WORK VISA
In most cases, you must first secure a Work Visa before you can legally work, live and earn money within a particular country. And you must ensure you apply for the correct Work Visa for your unique needs.
Work Visas are a legal requirement introduced by the New Zealand government to selectively permit foreign individuals to carry out work-related activities in New Zealand.
To legally work in New Zealand, you must either have an official full-time job offer (to apply for an Essential Skills Work Visa) or have a partner that is already living and working in New Zealand (to apply for a Partnership-Based Work Visa).
Without a Work Visa, you are not legally authorised by the local government to work and earn money in New Zealand.
If you wish to apply for a Work Visa, reach out to one of our immigration consultants by email (applications@immigrationconsultancies.com) or call us at 09 369 1681 today.
What Is a Work Visa?
- A Work Visa simply refers to a permit or a legal authorisation provided by the local government giving a foreign individual the right to carry out work-related activities in New Zealand, Australia or Canada.
- Essential Skills Work Visa: You can apply for an Essential Skills Work Visa if you have been offered a full-time job and hold the relevant qualifications and experience to successfully carry out your duties in said job.
- Once your visa is granted, you can support the visa applications of your partner and dependent children, and conduct your work-related responsibilities for up to three years depending on the salary offered by your employer.
- Partnership-Work Visa: You can apply for a Partnership-Based Work Visa if you wish to join your partner in New Zealand. This is an open Work Visa, which means your visa is not attached to a particular employer and allows you to freely change your position, workplace or employer.
- The permitted length of your stay in New Zealand depends on you and your partner’s previous living arrangements. If you have been living with your partner longer than 12 months, you can get a 2-year Partnership-Based Work Visa. If you have lived with your partner less than 12 months, you can get a 1-year Partnership-Based Work Visa.
- Please contact our licensed advisors to learn more about the specific types of evidence required by Partnership Visa applications.
Prior to the expiration of the visa, you can apply for residence based on your partnership.

Who Needs a Work Visa?
If you are a foreign individual seeking employment in New Zealand, you will need to apply for a Work Visa.
Simply put, to legally work in New Zealand you must either be offered a full-time job opportunity by a New Zealand employer or have a partner already working and living in New Zealand.
If your circumstances are different (e.g. you are a business owner or a self-employed individual) then you too need to be granted a legal permit to conduct regular work activities within New Zealand.
If you are unsure whether you need a Work Visa or which kind of Work Visa is required, we recommend speaking to one of our immigration visa specialists.
The Typical Work Visa Application Process
First, you need to gather all the documentation required for your Work Visa application. In many cases, this entails a combination of relevant job qualifications, an offer of employment by a New Zealand-based employer and any other necessary documentation to support your application.
At ICL, we cover every area of the application, and provide thousands of potential New Zealand migrants with visa application services each year.
Once you have compiled the necessary documents and completed the relevant forms, you can submit your application for review. Then, you simply wait for a decision.
In some cases, you may be asked for further supporting documentation. This can cause significant delays that can be highly stressful if you do not have professional guidance.
During the review, the visa regulatory body can decide to either deny entry to New Zealand or grant your Work Visa.
