23 Sep 2024: The New Zealand government has introduced an essential update to visa rules for partners of New Zealand citizens and residence-class visa holders. Starting 1 October 2024, the maximum duration for both work and visitor visas for partners will increase from 2 years to 3 years.
This extension is available for couples who have lived together for at least 12 months, giving them more time to save for residence application fees. It also brings the visa duration in line with those granted to partners of temporary migrants.
The new 3-year visa duration applies to applications submitted on or after 1 October 2024, and applications are already in process but not yet decided by that date. However, current visas will not be automatically extended, meaning partners must apply again to take advantage of the extended stay.
This change is part of the government’s more significant effort to improve New Zealand’s immigration system. It aims to attract and retain skilled individuals who can contribute to the country’s economic growth.
