About AEWV Balance
If your current Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is nearing its expiration and you still have time left to stay in New Zealand, referred to as your “maximum continuous stay,” you may be eligible to apply for a new AEWV.
The AEWV balance is essentially the remaining time you have to stay in New Zealand on a new AEWV after your current one ends. The total time you can stay on one or more AEWVs is capped at 5 years, depending on factors like your role, pay, and the date of your first AEWV application.
Reapplying for Your AEWV Balance
When your AEWW is about to expire, you can apply for a new AEWV to extend your stay. To apply, follow the steps mentioned below.
Step 1: Apply for a new AEWV
You must submit a new application and pay the visa fee.
Step 2: Receive a Job Token
Your employer will send you a link, a “job token,” to apply for the new visa.
Meet New Requirements
Effective April 7, 2024, updated English language and skill requirements must be met when reapplying for your AEWV balance.
Key Points to Remember:
We have provided a few key information points you might need to know in order to help your AEWV visa process to go smoothly.
- Suppose your original AEWV application was after April 7, 2024. In that case, you will need a new job token and cannot reuse your previous one.
- Suppose your original AEWV application was before April 7, 2024. In that case, you might be eligible to reuse the original job token, provided certain conditions are met (same role, location, employer, and salary).
Reusing Job Tokens
A job token is a unique online link your employer provides that allows you to apply for an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). It confirms that the employer has a valid job offer for you and that Immigration New Zealand accredits them to hire migrant workers.
Here’s how the job token works:
- Employer’s Role: Your employer applies for and passes a Job Check, ensuring the job meets certain conditions like paying the median wage. Once the Job Check is approved, they get a job token and send it to you.
- Your Role: Once you receive the job token, you use it to apply for your AEWV through the Immigration New Zealand system. This job token is necessary to link your visa application to the specific job offer and employer.
Each job token is specific to one job, employer, and location. You will need a new job token if you change jobs or employers or move to a new location.

Eligibility to Reuse Job Tokens:
- Before April 7, 2024: If you applied before this date, you might reuse the original job token without your employer needing a new Job Check, as long as you are in the same role and location and receiving the same or higher salary.
- Between June 21, 2023, and April 6, 2024: You can reuse the job token if you were paid the February 2023 median wage or your role is in the care or transport sectors.
- Before June 20, 2023: You can reuse the job token if your role is at ANZSCO level 1 to 3 and you were paid the median wage in place at the time of your application.
If you are changing your role, location, or employer, you cannot reuse a job token. You will need a new job token, and your employer must go through the Job Check process again.
Conditions for Reusing a Job Token in Certain Roles:
For roles classified at ANZSCO levels 4 or 5, you can only reuse a job token if your role meets one of these conditions:
- It is listed on the Green List.
- It is part of the Care workforce sector agreement.
- It is an approved Transport Work to Residence role.
- Your pay is 1.5 times the median wage from when your visa was granted.
Processing and Timing Considerations
You should apply for your AEWV balance closer to your visa’s expiration to avoid complications if your circumstances change. When reusing a job token, the application will be placed in a queue and processed in the order it is received. Priority is given to applications where the AEWV expires within the next nine months.
If your AEWV expires before your new application is processed, you will be granted an Interim Visa, allowing you to stay and continue working for up to six months.
Partners and Children
If you qualify for an AEWV balance extension, your partner and any dependent children may also apply for further visas to match the length of your new AEWV. They must meet visa requirements and pay any necessary fees.
If you have not previously supported a visa for them, you will need to meet specific pay and skill requirements to support their application.
By following these steps and ensuring you meet all conditions, you can extend your stay in New Zealand without disruptions through a new AEWV.
