New Zealand to Require NZeTA for Cargo Ship Crew and Passengers from April 2025

January 28, 2025  – As per NZ Immigration’s new directives, From April 1, 2025, all crew members and passengers on foreign cargo ships must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before traveling to New Zealand, according to a recent announcement by Immigration New Zealand.

Applications will open on February 3, 2025, to ensure a smooth transition. Passengers and cargo ship crew must apply in advance to meet the new entry requirements.

Application Process for NZeTA

For Passengers

Passengers can apply for a Traveller NZeTA through the official Immigration New Zealand mobile app or via the Immigration New Zealand website starting February 3, 2025.

For Crew Members

Cargo carriers will be responsible for obtaining NZeTAs for their crew members. From February 3, 2025, registered cargo carriers can request Crew NZeTAs through the Batch ETA system.

  • Cargo carriers needing access to this system must request an onboarding package by contacting BatchETA@mbie.govt.nz.

Immigration New Zealand is urging cargo carriers to begin the NZeTA application process as soon as possible before the deadline of April 1, 2025, to prevent travel disruptions.

Purpose of the New Requirement

The introduction of the NZeTA for maritime crew and passengers aims to:

  • Strengthen border security by implementing digital pre-screening.
  • Improve efficiency in processing travelers.
  • Ensure compliance with evolving immigration regulations.

According to Immigration New Zealand, authorities have been actively working with cargo carriers to facilitate a smooth implementation of the new system before the mandatory deadline.

Cost and Validity of NZeTA

  • The NZeTA costs between NZD $17 and $23 per person.
  • It will be valid for 2 years for passengers and up to 5 years for crew members.
  • In addition, most passengers will be required to pay the International Visitor and Conservation Levy (IVL) of NZD $100 at the time of application.

With the April 1 deadline approaching, Immigration New Zealand is urging all affected travelers and carriers to apply early to avoid any disruptions.
