  1. The highest number of visas approved was in 2018/19, with 242,391 approvals.
  2. The most visa declines happened in 2017/18, with 19,884 declines, but this dropped in the following years.
  3. During the pandemic in 2020/21, visa approvals fell to their lowest at 152,174.
  4. Visa approvals started recovering, reaching 226,065 in 2022/23 but slightly decreased to 200,579 in 2023/24.

NZ Work Visa Trends by Nationality (2021/22 – 2023/24)

  1. India saw the most approvals in 2023/24, with 38,455 approvals, up from 31,019 in 2021/22.
  2. China approvals peaked at 26,041 in 2022/23 but dropped to 15,608 in 2023/24.
  3. The Philippines had 19,243 approvals in 2023/24, down from 23,311 the previous year.
  4. Germany approvals decreased from 8,664 in 2022/23 to 7,267 in 2023/24.
  5. France remained stable, with 7,838 approvals in 2023/24, down slightly from 9,194 in 2022/23.
  6. United States saw a decline in approvals, from 8,256 in 2022/23 to 6,022 in 2023/24.
  7. Vanuatu slightly increased approvals, from 7,610 in 2022/23 to 7,794 in 2023/24.
  8. South Korea had a sharp drop in approvals, from 4,251 in 2022/23 to 2,338 in 2023/24.
  9. Japan saw an increase in approvals, rising from 4,167 in 2022/23 to 4,908 in 2023/24.
  10. Vietnam approvals decreased slightly, from 4,541 in 2022/23 to 4,376 in 2023/24.

Key Trends in NZ Work Visa Categories (2020/21 – 2023/24)

Accredited Employer Visas:

  • In 2022/23, 71,311 visas were approved. This dropped to 50,962 approved in 2023/24.
  • There were more declined visas in 2023/24 (4,729) compared to 2022/23 (1,878).

Essential Skills Visas:

  • In 2020/21, 39,062 visas were approved, but by 2023/24, only 6 were approved.
  • This shows a significant drop in the use of this visa.

Working Holiday Visas:

  • Canada: Approvals increased from 438 in 2020/21 to 2,076 in 2023/24.
  • France: Visas grew from 84 approved in 2020/21 to 6,812 in 2023/24.
  • Germany: Similarly, approvals rose from 70 in 2020/21 to 6,262 in 2023/24.

Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) Visas:

  • In 2020/21, 15,135 visas were approved.
  • This number increased to 18,986 in 2023/24.

Asylum Seeker Visas:

  • The number of approved visas increased from 753 in 2020/21 to 1,895 in 2023/24.

Entertainers and Associated Workers Visas:

  • In 2020/21, 386 visas were approved.
  • By 2023/24, this grew to 2,481 visas.

Variation of Conditions (VOC) Visas:

  • There were 21,019 approvals in 2020/21, but by 2023/24, approvals had dropped, leaving only 639 visas declined.

Chile and Argentina Working Holiday Visas:

  • These programs saw steady activity, with Argentina approving around 914 visas in 2023/24 and Chile approving 917 visas.

Asylum Seeker Visas:

  • Visa approvals went from 753 in 2020/21 to 1,895 in 2023/24, showing a steady increase.

United Kingdom Working Holiday Visas:

  • Approvals rose from 1,712 in 2020/21 to 6,954 in 2023/24, but declines also increased to 10,210 in 2023/24.
